Anyone who has worked on optimizing their websites to rank on the first page of Google will tell you that it takes a lot of work and worst of all it doesn’t just happen over night. Many hours of writing and link building later and your website is finally ranking where you want it to be.
Just as you are rewarded with your hard work, Google decides to purge their system and introduce their new Google Panda Update 3.5. If you are like me who check stats and ranking of all my websites every morning wake up and to find them basically gone from the index and all of your links have disappeared, the only thing you can ask is WTF?
Google has introduced their new Panda 3.5 which in their words means “another step to reward high quality websites.” You want to know why your links and rankings have disappeared? Read Google’s Official Announcement.
In the next few days, we’re launching an important algorithm change targeted at webspam. The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s existing quality guidelines. We’ve always targeted webspam in our rankings, and this algorithm represents another improvement in our efforts to reduce webspam and promote high quality content.
With this Panda update it seems that Google is penalizing link builders who build a ton of links to their websites, even if they are quality links. Although this may seem likely, google is penalizing links that don’t look natural.
- Too many links to fast with the same “spamlike” keyword anchor text
- Too many links from websites Google determines as “spam” websites
- Links are not “trustworthy”
Starting fresh or doing a whole site reboot is not an option for me or anyone else but there are other alternatives to put your website in the grace of Google once more. Many SEO experts are saying to remove your inbound links but I beg to differ. I would leave them because if Google has a problem with them then they will be purged. My belief is that this is just a slap on the wrist by Google just to purge their garbage websites, and other link farming websites out of their index.
Every person has their own ways to improve their search engine rankings but with the new Panda 3.5 update you will want to make sure you know what you are doing. To help you find out who is doing it correctly, you will want to get some information from the most respected SEO experts in the industry. Some Tips To Help You Rank Again!
- Change your link building campaigns
- Use naked links rather than keyword links
- Become A Source By Improving Social Signals
If you are unsure of what some of the above terms mean please read this article on better SEO ranking tips.
It is no secret that Google is competing with social dominance and you can read my post about social media dominance.
Google is using social signals to actually give value to search engine optimizers, bloggers, and other people who provide information on the internet with a reward for becoming a great source of information. It seems that Google is now using your social rank “Social signal” as a way to better rank your website.
Think about it, you are writing about a topic and yes, you know everything there is to know about this topic but you have no social media value. Meaning, you have no followers in Google Plus that can actually use your information to help them. You can write all you want about the topic but don’t expect your website to rank better if you don’t have a social media presence.
- Create a Facebook page, Twitter account, and Google+ page
- Make sure your website visitors can connect with you on these channels by including “Connect” links on your website
- Publish rich, quality onsite content and broadcast your newly-published content via these channels
Panda 3.5 Aftermath
These are just some of the ways that can help you get back the rankings that you worked so hard for. Like I said before, Google is placing a huge emphasis on Social Signals/Social Presence. If Google doesn’t think that you are a great source for information about the topic you are trying to rank for then it will be pretty much impossible to get the rankings you desire (as of now).
The best thing to do is DON’T Panic!
Yes, you lost your rankings but don’t do anything drastic because whose to say that Google won’t make changes in the future to where they will reward you for the links you are currently building? Whose to say that these changes will stick? The point is, whatever SEO work you have done in the past don’t stop doing it but make it more valuable in the eyes of your audience but better yet, make all of your SEO techniques better in the eyes of Google as well.Invest In Your Brand Not Search Engines
